In a recent move, my ancient, former Doctor's Office Microscope was irreparably damaged. About the only thing I used it for was periodic inspection of phono cartridge stylii. Don't need much "horsepower" for that, so when I saw this unit at its very low price, I thought "how bad can it be? Surely it'll get the job done."

I couldn't have been more wrong. The ONLY things good about this little "gem" is the BOX it comes it, where it's referred to as a "DIECAST METAL MICROSCOPE SET" by Vivitar, "World Leader in Optics Since 1938." I guess maybe that depends on your definitiions of World Leader and optics.

Here's the nitty gritty in just three sentences:

1. The ONLY thing that's diecast on this guy is the BASE. The entire microscope itself is CHEAP, THIN BLACK PLASTIC.
2. It is SO POORLY CONSTRUCTED that its part fit too poorly to even allow proper focus. IT IS VIRTUALLY UNUSABLE!

I hastily made a purchase on one of those Daily Deals websites, thinking that I had picked up a bargain. I should have read the reviews here first. They were spot on.

I'd suggest that this product is good for the following uses:
1. A paperweight for the scientifically inclined geek.
2. As a gag gift with placard declaring this as "Property of a Scientifically-Inclined Geek".
3. As a make-believe toy for scientifically-inclined geeky kids.

Not recommended for any educational purposes.

Only wish I'd have looked at reviews on this item before purchasing it (it was highlighted on a local news show "bargain of the day"). It's truly a piece of junk. Dont let the Vivitar name fool you. It was broken upon arrival. The hardware that holds the mirror/light on was in pieces and appears impossible to fix. Dont waste your time or money on this worthless item.

I was looking to buy this microphone for my DCR-HC90 and after reading the reviews already on here, most people seemed to either give 1 one star saying it was useless or 5 stars saying it was great, which of course I found quite frustrating.

Anyway, now that I've got one and have played around with it, I'm quite happy with it. Using the 'gun' setting on the mic really does cut down on surrounding atmos etc which is what I was after, if you're looking to film an interview, even in a relatively noisy location, this should cut down a fair bit on everything other than the person you're pointing it at.

Of course this mic won't give you a completely professional result (which I think some people were expecting) - then again, this isn't a professional microphone. It is simply meant to be a step up from using the in-built mic - and it is.

I've been using this microphone off and on with my issued Sony HD camcorder, and before that, with a Sony SD hard drive-based camcorder, for perhaps 2 years or so. Understand that the HGZ1 by no means is a $500-or-above Sennheiser shotgun microphone that picks up subtle whispers and bumble bee noises. Come now, we're talking about a $60 piece of equipment. But on a number of occasions, people have asked me whether the audio I've captured with this unit was actually captured on a lavalier microphone. If you understand how the HGZ1 works, you'll find ways of making work for you under more extreme conditions.

Remember, this unit is proprietary; until someone designs a better one, this is it, for mounting to the Sony (unless you buy a wired mic for those camcorders that have mic jacks). **Note: There IS an alternative, wireless bluetooth Sony makes, the Sony ECMHW1 Bluetooth Wireless Microphone... I read all the reviews and then tested the microphone on my Sony HDR-HC3. I agree with others that the gun mode is best. And there might be uses for the zoom affect, like having the sound increase in strength as one moves into a scene. But in normal mode like filming wedding vows from a distance the gun mode would be best while zoomed or not zoomed.

This mic was purchased for use with a Canon HV-20 camcorder. Primary purpose is for videotaping interviews with people who are sitting (not moving around). It comes with a 20' cable, which is more than enough for use in any room in the average size home.
Build quality: better than I expected for the price, the battery and pre-amp holder feel more like aluminum than plastic (it's hard to tell under the black paint). The mic element itself is tiny, and comes with a lapel clip and foam wind screen. The wind screen, like the mic element itself, is tiny and pretty easy to pull off, so keep an eye on it that it doesn't become lost. The battery is one of the "button" types, rather than a "AA" (which I would have preferred). One battery is supplied - I have no idea of how long it might last, so better have a spare. The mike is a condenser type, so it will not work at all if the battery is dead.

This was the first mic I bought to go along with my Sony VX2100 Minidv camcorder!
The 20' cord was what attracted me first, and then the price, but when I played back some footage I was blown away with the professional sound that it produces! The quality to my ears seems equal to any interview I hear on television! It's that good!

I wear or place this about mid chest level and that seems about right, but it will pick up nicely even if placed further away. Its by far better than any camcorder mic! The 20' cord is great when your subject or yourself needs to move around to demonstrate something. Or to be stationary in a long shot!

I try intimate above, if your subject is sitting 5' to 6' from the camera lense in an interview position, this powerful little mic works equally as well. 1' or 20' makes no difference!
Bottom line; when I'm recording indoors I never use the on-board mic, I always reach for this and plug it in!

I've been a professional television reporter/producer for four years, and I was astounded by the sound quality of this mic.

I bought it for a trip to Ethiopia to use with my personal camcorder, a 3CCD Panasonic. I was going for work, with a crew, but I wanted to shoot some travel videos of my own. On my last trip to South Africa I did the same, but the camera mic sounded lousy, especially compared to the pro-audio I was getting with the stories themselves.

That totally changed with this trip. The sound quality I have on my travel video standups with this $26 microphone is about 95% the quality I get from our professional gear. That runs $300 for a mic, $300 for the wireless transmitter, and $300 for the receiver. So $26 compared to $900+ is a fantastic deal.

The 20 feet of mic wire does get a bit tangled from time to time if you're using the mic on the run. But for the quality sound you get back from it, hassling with the wire is very much... Read more

The Sony Bluetooth mic system's functionality and ease-of-use is consistent with the quality of most Sony products. I use it in the legal profession and so far it has performed to my expectations. If there is a con or a down-side to this particular piece of equipment, I would say that it is the battery usage. I used it on three (3) separate occasions totalling about 4hrs on the same battery. There is a blinking red warning light on both pieces, but you have only a minute of two before it goes dead, so have fresh batteries close by.

This is a great product. The only two drawbacks are:
* The mic's battery life is too short (about 30-45 minutes is the most I got out of a fresh new battery)
* The size of the mic is a bit too big to hide on a subject. You can't avoid having it in the frame and the bright blue light is also not helping hiding it. Would be nice to have an option to attache a wired mic to it so you can have a small neck mic connected to the device and have the device clipped to the belt or something like it on the subject.

With lav mikes running anywhere from $10 to $250 these days, it is nice to find a $25 unit with tie clip and wind screen. Sound quality is excellent and works fine with wireless systems. It does, however, require a bias voltage to work properly as do most condenser mikes. Most all systems (azden, sennheiser, etc) provide this bias on the connector to make the mike work so it is not a problem. Be sure your jack has around 5 volts or so on the mike terminals and you are good to go.

FYI - the price of the whole mic is less than the tie clip and wind screen bought separately, so if you need to replace a lost part just buy a new mike!

Great price. I bought this for a video shoot. I plugged it in to my computer... and it sounded really shallow and noisy. I plugged it in to my Panasonic dvx through a really bad mini to XLR converter. It sounded very noisy again. So I blamed it on the cnverter.

Then... I plugged it directly into a Canon 5D. I was amazed! It really sounds good. On top of that, is is shockingly noise-less. Good full bodied voices. Not tingy or shallow. Ultimately, I am really happy with it. We'll see how it performs tomorrow during the shoot.

P.S. it comes with a little wind shield. You cant beat that with a stick for 17 bucks!
I'll try to add a video demo soon.

The Azden transmitter-receiver system has operated marvelously well for me over scores of interviews. As an aspiring video maker it was a product I should have bought a long time ago.

Mine is the 9v-powered model, not the AA. But it has proven well-made, light and easy to use.

There's something neat about micing people with a lavaliere unit. I find that they enjoy the attention of attaching the mic and the professional touch that it brings to the taping.

Being able to range abut the room while taping and simultaneously retaining good audio is a remarkable experience. Another benefit of micing someone is that cuts way back on ambient noise. The din of voices surrounding your interview is a typical intrusion; using the lavaliere cuts out a great deal of the unwanted sonic information.

Overall, this is a good investment for beginning videographer. It works as described, yet I found that it's sound needed post work if it was going to be presaentable. My standards are not unrealistic, yet I was disappointed when I first worked with this mic. It comes with a lavalier mic, and a handheld. Of the two, the handheld pickup better, and is more manageable. Both only record in mono, so you have to set your camera to place the signal on the two channels, or do so in postproduction.

Still, if you wish to use a mic that is dependable, is inconspicuous, and has a small learning curve, this mic could serve your purposes.

I've been using Sony's ECM-MS907 for more than 5 years now and have loved it; so two weeks ago I ordered the Sony ECM-CS10 to use for audio journal keeping while on the road. When it arrived just a few days ago, I compared the audio quality of its recordings to that of my existing Sony microphone. In spite of its pleasing aesthetics, I found it to be a sad disappointment!!! The ECM-CS10 is a very noisy microphone with an audio quality far inferior of what I would expect from a Sony mic. Frankly, I think I'm probably going to return it and look for something else. I've purchased a number of microphones on eBay and have only been satisfied with one other type of compact mic. Microsound makes it; and its a mic with a cable lead about three inches long. I'm not in any way affiliated with them, but I would recommend their product.

I have used the ECM-CS10 stereo microphone with my laptop for recording speech for audio embedded web pages. This is a very clear low noise stereo mic. It has a good high frequency response. It is not as loud/sensitive as the omni mics I have tried. But this unit records voice very well and with low noise. It is certainly not as boomy as many of the consumer grade omnidirectional single channel mics I have tried. In the laptop recording mode I use the mic with Sonic Stage audio recording software. It produces nice clean recordings. For top-notch speech sound and to increase the signal/noise ratio I even clip on BOTH the ECM-CS10 stereo mic and an omni microphone. I run them both into a 2:1 adaptor plug which then plugs into the laptop. There is no battery box needed with the laptop audio set up. The laptop supplies its own bias voltage/phantom power to the mic. I have also used this mic with button style battery boxes to feed audio into a Canon GL2 camcorder. It gives good results... This is NOT TRUE. There is no battery unit shipped with this device; you can see it in the instructions, but it isn't in the package. So, unless you are using it with a "selected Sony or Aiwa" device, DON'T BUY THIS. It won't work.

BTW, I am a slow learner. When I bought the first one of these, I thought it was defective because it didn't have the battery pack. I returned it and got another one, which was absolutely unopened -- guess what! THERE IS NO BATTERY PACK IN THE BLISTERPACK.

My first reaction to this microphone was astonishment at is its small size. It's larger than most lapel microphones, but that's because of the physical requirements for noise-cancellation. Still, it's very small, especially for a true "cardioid" (noise-cancelling) microphone.

The performance is superb! As Jim wrote, it is very sensitive. I tested it in a quiet room at distances up to 10 feet away. At about 3 feet, my voice was strong and clear. At 10 feet, it was obviously remote, but the sound was good and very clear, with no echo. Off-axis, the sensitivity drops rapidly. At about 70 degrees, the sound weakens noticeably, and beyond 90 degrees, it is almost inaudible.

M. L. Strickland is correct in warning that the microphone requires external power. The instructions on the box specify 1.5 - 10 volts. Writers who reported that the microphone was very weak were almost certainly using a recorder that does not provide the necessary excitation voltage... Read more

For a cheapo microphone, I was pleasantly surpised with how well this worked at picking up speakers who were a distance away. You may have to adjust the sensitivity of the recorder, because the sensitivity of this mic is significantly higher than the built-in stereo mic, and recording to 'hot' will result in garbled, distorted sound.

The Olympus recorders seem to select sensitivity with labels like 'dictate' and 'conference', where 'conference' would normally be used in a distant recording situation but if the record bar hits the right side of the screen you want to set it to the lower sensitivity mode 'dictate'. In any case, with this (mono) mic you should change your recording mode to Mono so you can get double the record time.

I did an interview in a noisy restaurant and put the recorder on the table with the mic pointed straight up. The mic picked up both voices very well and cut down the background noise by at least 70%. The interview would have been impossible otherwise.

So, you bought a Canon Vixia camcorder? The picture is stunning - and it's hard to believe you can get such beautiful images from such a compact camcorder. Unfortunately, there is no way you'll get top notch sound from a compact camcorder, no matter how much you paid for it. This isn't a matter of a design flaw; it has to do with the physics of sound: a directional microphone needs to be long; for best sound the microphone needs to be physically separated from the body of the camera; finally, some kind of muffle is needed to prevent wind and breath from interfering with sound. Canon's DM-100 is designed to achieve all of these things for the sound of the Vixia line camcorders, without overwhelming the simplicity and ease of a compact camcorder. I'm very happy with it.

This mic provides three sound acceptance patterns (shotgun, 90-degree stereo and 120-degree stereo spreads), and comes with an effective windscreen. It fits the new Canon HF10 and HF100 customized hot shoe, making those hi-def cameras that much more effective and professional. Okay, semi-pro. But I like the results. The cameras have built-in stereo mics that work well, but are sensitive to the slightest breeze, which sounds like thunder. This external mic solves the wind noise problem, plus the switchable polar patterns and superb frequency response add depth and dimension not possible with the on-camera mic. First of all, pay no attention to a review written here which suggests that a Rode Directional Videomic is a better buy for this camera. While it may or may not be a better microphone, it is a LOT more expensive (at around $250). Either the reviewer was mistaken or got his off the back of a truck (hint: not legally).

At $150 the Canon DM100 is priced decently for a pretty good sounding microphone. But you have to have realistic expectations for ANY microphone. I've worked in the industry and can tell you there is no such thing as a shotgun mic that actually isolates sound from far away. Even the best directional (shotgun) mic needs to be quite closely situated to get "close up" sound. So if you're thinking you can be across a crowded room and get the same kind of sound you could get from a person in that room holding a microphone, forget about it.
